Reason---Sachin is not equal to his family financially. Of course, he feels Sachin is a good boy and has nothing against him. But does not want him to marry his sister. Raju has big dreams of marrying his beloved sister to a rich man, and asks her to cut off the relationship. But Renuka decides to elope with Sachin.

Sailaab ( the flood ) 'Sailaab' was one of the 'extramarital affairs serials' popular at that time ( 90s ) on Zee TV, the other being 'Hasratein' ( desires ). The serial shows two young lovers in love with one another in Mumbai/Bombay---Sachin Khedekar and Renuka Shahane. Sachin is struggling in the ad industry, and has come from another town. He is a hard worker, but does not have much money.

In another episode Urvashi's elder brother wants a new pair of very costly branded shoes. But when he gets, he does not wear them because they get dirty. He takes too much care of them.

Ek Mahal ho sapno ka 'Ek mahal ho sapno ka' was a daily soap that used to come on Monday to Friday in the afternoon and 08:30 am in the morning. The story revolves around the life of a business tycoon, Purshottam Nanavati, who leads his joint family of four married sons Sanat, Shekhar, Sameer & Abhay. Boogie Woogie Boogie-Woogie was a dance show. When it was started, the host of the serial was 'Naved Jaffery' and there were two judges 'Javed Jaffery' and 'Ravi Behal'.

When I was a child my grandmother used to narrate stories from scriptures to me religiously every night. And I used to listen with rapt attention---that's because she had a gift of a storyteller. After a long time I got interested in hindu mythology again---thanks to this serial. I hope the story of sati and shiva ( hindu god and his wife ) has a happy ending.I really hope so. AAAAHHH sati.so lovely, frail, delicate, fair, soft. The God should forgive me for dreaming about his consort at nights lately.actually I am dreaming about that actress.I dont even know her name. In fact all the women in the serial are so goodlooking---with such tender skin.

Mita Vashist, Rajeshwari Sachdeva and Surekha Sikri playing two generations of women for an episode directed by thespian Rajit Kapur. Rajkumar Hirani making his directorial debut. That’s quite a roll call! The brightest of Bollywood has been part of these hour-long novella-like stories shot with the sensibilities of celluloid, shown on Star Plus. That was the appeal of Star Bestsellers. Movers & Shakers (1997): Our First Late-Night Laughs.

All of which makes shiva the much more endearing god---the god who accepts everybody. I have become his fan lately. In fact,if somebody proves to me ( i am an atheist ) that he really exists, i will pray to him.

Deepak Malhotra (Kanwaljeet Singh). The other family was Potia family, they have also three kids i.e.

Then their life is changed when Kirron Kher's illegitimate daughter Sakshi walks into their lives. Kirron Kher tells her family that she is a relative but tells the truth to her husband. Her husband stops talking to her since then. Kirron loves her daughter so much because her childhood was without her mom.

Sanjana starts praising Sanjay in front of Eva and Eva gets impressed (Just like movie Style). O Maria was story of a girl Perlie who wanted to fulfill her dreams. She lived in a hostel and She wanted to be a successful singer but bitterness of life made her too harsh. Papiya sengupta played the protagonist Perlie and her love interest was Humayun Peerzada. Another character was Preeti/Ananya khare(Daughter of Golcha in Ye shaadi nahi ho sakti). Jaya Bhattacharya(Google it for her image) was also in this serial. I did not use to watch this serial but I saw it's short footage.

One of the main story is of Savi, a woman who leaves her husband and maintains an extra-marital relationship with another married man, with both their spouses being aware of the situation. Her actions were due to the fact that years ago, during her childhood, her mother left her father for a young man.

The world was of the early nineties---so no mobile phones. The era was old too---women did not smoke or drink even when the people shown were sophisticated city people because westernization had not seeped in at that time. Above all, even when the lovers meet in restaurants there is not sex or even kissing---the relationship between Sachin and Shivani remains physically chaste all the time because the Indian middle class audience which watched the serial at that time ( 90s ) was not prepared for that. This being a TV serial, everything happens in slow motion---for the whole story is to be dragged over 90+ episodes of 23 minutes each. But the serial is embellished with superb songs by Talat Aziz and the late Jagjit Singh, and these heighten the emotion and sensitivity of the scenes. Indeed music is the high point of the serial, and it has many emotional scenes acted very well. The serial went on to become a success, and was ZEE TV's number one serial at that time.

For 20 years – with some breaks in between – Aahat has been haunting audiences across the country. It started in October 1995, when Sony first launched. And within two years, Aahat was cable and satellite TV’s most watched show, rating higher than even the soaps. And it overtook the massively popular Zee Horror Show by the Ramsays.

Hasratein Serial Ending

Malhotra looks wet. That was hilarious scene. We know Aahat as a horror serial but when it was started, it was more suspense thriller crime drama than horror.

Dishearted man leaves the house and disappears in the dark. Mahayagya was a story about political families, actually I did not watch this serial so I do not know the story but I used to see its trailers that's why I know the star cast. There was Rohini Hattangadi (Sanjay Dutt's mother in Munna Bhai MBBS) in serial whose rival was Manohar Singh (Chief minister in movie Tiranga), I think his name was Bhanu-Pratap in the serial. I am not quite sure.

This is why we must take a look at some of the best television serials that have captured the fancy and attention of Indian viewers over the years. Hasratein: It was a soap opera aired on the Zee Entertainment television in the mid 1990s. It was a tale of love, extra marital relationships and the complexities. It was one of those serials noted for mature acting by the cast and superb handling by the makers. Children were prevented from watching it but the parents couldn’t help marvel at the intense adult drama. ( img source: ) 9. CID: A crime thriller which first aired in January 1998, CID has been going on for over 14 years.

Jaane Kahan mera Jigar Gaya jee 'Jaane Kahan mera Jigar Gaya jee' is one of the oldest serial of sony. I am not able to remember the story but I remember some scenes of the serial. There was a sad girl Taruna in the serial who keeps crying always. I think her mother Anadita was a bollywood actress or something. Anadita had a affair with her co star and taruna did not like this.

Summet Raghavan, Rajesh Kumar, Satish Shah in a typically crazy scene from Sarabhai vs Sarahai. (Hindustan Times) Rukmani (Ratna Pathak Shah) and Prashant (Satish Shah) were back as Maya and Indravadan Sarabhai on Star One, a few pounds richer and heavier, living in a swish SoBo apartment. Their sons were called Sahil (Sumeet Raghavan) and Rosesh (Rajesh Kumar). Sahil had a wife, the ‘downmarket’ Monisha Sarabhai (Rupali Ganguly), bullied by her ‘prim and propah’ saas. Remember the catchphrase, ‘Don’t mind me beta, I’m just making a point’? Hasratein (1996): Rocking The Boat In the 1990s, it required a certain bravado to depict extramarital relationships on the small screen.

Svetlana (played by Kitu Gidwani) is a mistress whose rich patron dies. She struggles to deal with the emotional turmoil that follows his death along with bitter inheritance wars and succession rights with the legitimate family. Satish Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah.

When Raju hears of this he pours petrol on himself and threatens to kill himself by burning himself to death if Renuka elopes. Under severe pressure Renuka crumbles and agrees to end the relationship.

ACP Pradyuman, Daya and Abhijeet have become household names and a favourite among the children. It is a record in itself how the Indian TV series has sustained for so long and still going strong. Probably the universal appeal of the show from children to octogenarians is the reason for it thriving through so many changes in the Indian television scene. ( img source: ) 8. Shanti – Ek Aurat Ki Kahani: A cult serial that amazed and awed the Indian audiences, Shanti was a drama series which first aired on Doordarshan National in the year 1994.

Old-fashioned mentality wanting a pretty wife who can take care of his house and family---they have a young son Satish (there is a story behind his name too but that is best caught while watching the serial). The story goes from there with Savi eventually getting bored with the home life and wanting to work.against Shyam's wishes she starts working and lands herself with a job at BB Publicity.run by KT.young attractive well off guy from a successful business family rooted in Delhi (e.g. KT's parents life in Delhi---KT meanwhile is married with two young children-picture perfect family). From there the real story starts.the central topic is age old---EMA (extra-marital affair)---but it is the very unique wy it is handled that makes it one of a kind. Shefali Chaaya who takes over playing Savi's character is superb.as is Harsh Chaaya.

____________________________________________________ I had the pleasure of watching 'The Expanse' a few weeks back. Really awesome tv series based on the novels of the same name, the cgi and vfx on it is like a big budget movie. Set 100-200 years in the future, human beings have colonized Mars and some asteroid belts. There's people fighting over territory(mars vs earth), there's politics, mercenaries, revolutionaries, space battles with warships, interplanetary detectives, etc. Some reviewers who happen to be scientists have hailed it for being surprisingly accurate wrt the economy of a futuristic world and the overall science.

Hum Log: The first soap opera to have graced the Indian Television, Hum Log, is truly a landmark when it comes to some of the best Indian TV series of all time. On 7 th July 1984, it first began telecast on Doordarshan which was the only channel available during those days. It ran for 156 episodes and at the time it ended it was the longest running television show to have graced the Indian Television Industry. Ashok Kumar a veteran actor on Bollywood would appear at the end of every episode of Hum Log and end it by reciting Hindi couplets complementing the ongoing situations. ( img source: ) 2. The five fingers open and close, and it makes a punch & the serial's name was written on the punch. Cook It Up With Tarla Dalal It was a cookery show. The first Indian Idol winner Abhijit Sawant (far left) on the sets of the show. Almost 12 years ago, the first episode of Indian Idol (a franchise of Britain’s Pop Idol) was aired on Sony TV. Today, six seasons later, the show has spawned countless mini celebs and much of India has voted for a talented or deserving voice. It’s also become the benchmark for how to deal with criticism from a TV judge and how to go from television to Bollywood playback.

But director Ajai Sinha decided to take that risk. To Sinha’s credit, he narrated the story with great maturity. Based on the Marathi novel Adhantari, written by renowned author Jaywant Dalvi, the Zee serial chronicled the life of Savi, who leaves her husband and gets into a relationship with her married boss. With powerful performances by Shefali, and Harsh Chhaya, the show managed to recreate the fine nuances of a man-woman relationship. Looking at the subject from a woman’s point of view added to the show’s appeal. Niki Aneja Walia and Varun Badola, older woman, younger man.

Under severe pressure Renuka crumbles and agrees to end the relationship. When Sachin hears of this he is devastated. At the same time he hears of his father's death and the world collapses around him. Renuka is married off to another person, a rich doctor played first by Ajinkya Dev and later by Mahesh Thakur---the change in actors being a phenomena of long TV serials.

Freedom to mix among men not of one's household. Whatever happened that women became enslaved in ghoonghat later.?? I guess it must be the effect of the invasions of foreign invaders and the need to hide women from the prying eyes of invaders, what else. And the god of fallen women like madanike is our very own shiva ( the god of all the gods )---for he alone is capable of showing the largeheartedness to accept the prayers of fallen women like her. He is not bound by laws of society and does not live according to its rigid rules. For him, a prostitute is the same as a respectable lady; prayers of both are equal to him. On the other hand, vishnu ( the other hindu god ) is bound by rules of society; rules which indeed, he is oath bound to preserve and therefore prostitutes like madanike dont pray to him.

A Mouthful of Sky (1995): When Indian TV Spoke English. Rahul Bose, Rajeev Mulchandani, Shiuli Subaya, Neesha Singh and Milind Soman in A Mouthful of Sky, (Photo: HT Photo). Written by Ashok Banker, A Mouthful of Sky was India’s first English-language television series, and had names like Anant Balani, Mahesh Bhatt and Ajay Goel among its directors. It began with a reunion and quickly turned into a thriller, which was eerily similar to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. Owing to its ‘bold’ content, it was aired during a late-night slot on DD Metro – but its plot kept the audience hooked to the screen even post 11pm. The other thing that worked for it was the dream (or rather, dreamy) cast: Milind Soman, Rahul Bose, Ranjeev Mulchandani, Samir Soni, Mukul Dev, Parvin Dabas, Arjun Rampal, Simone Singh, Ayesha Dharker, Kruttika Desai and Kamal Sidhu.
